Description

Note: This bug prevents completion of the game. It was previously reported in the wiki and marked as fixed, but seems to have resurfaced.

  1. Game Name and ID (as it appears in right click > properties: "GZ2P01",
    "RSBE01", etc): Paper Mario (G8ME01)

2) What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
It should be possible to use Yoshi's Gulp move in battle. The player should be able to select it, then hold down 'X' until the star lights up to complete the move.

3) Did the game ever work correctly (i.e. not have this problem) on an
earlier version of dolphin? Please specify the exact revision when the
problem began.
I don't know, but there's an exact description of this bug in the compatibility wiki page for the game that says it was fixed in 3.0, so I assume this is a regression somewhere between 3.0's release and now.

4) What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. In chapter 3, add the hatched Yoshi to your party.
  2. Begin a fight against the #10 ranked team.
  3. Once it's the Yoshi's turn, attempt to use his 'Gulp' special move.

5) What version of dolphin are you using (32bit/64bit along with the
version as it appears in the title bar, etc)? Do not say 'latest version'
this changes multiple times a day.
On what operating system, drivers, and hardware? Be sure to list OS,
graphics driver information, and video card model if you are having
graphics problems, for example.
3.0-832 for OS X 10.8.2.

Some system info:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number of Processors: 2
Total Number of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per Processor): 12 MB

SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
System Version: OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
Kernel Version: Darwin 12.2.0
Boot Mode: Normal
Secure Virtual Memory: Enabled

And on the display adapter:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4870
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)

ROM Revision: 113-B7710C-176
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.318

6) Please provide any additional information below.
The writeup of this bug from the Wiki that I mentioned is on the compatibility wiki page here: http://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Paper_Mario:_The_Thousand-Year_Door

Also: I've confirmed I'm using all recommended settings from that page. I'll try some older versions out and report back if I find one that works.

Tried a few other builds (semi-at-random):

3.0: Unrelated bug kept me from trying in this release
3.0-419: I could reproduce the bug in this version
3.0-710: Also reproducible in 710

I was able to confirm this also doesn't work in the stable 3.0 build for Mac. So perhaps it's not a regression, but was never working correctly in Mac builds?

if you like, i can check if it does the same thing for windows, but i would first ask if you could check into my issue. one about a problem that was masked by fast mipmaps.
it is paper mario TTYD, so you should be able to find the issue no problem. look for issue 5728 and try to confirm it with you mac, and i will try to confirm it with my windows computer. also, could you try to put your memory card with a save or save state attached to make it easier for anyone else trying to confirm? there are instructions on how to get your mem card and save files in the forums. note: i am not a developer, i am just another person with TTYD that wants to help confirm this regression, as it would effect my gameplay.

Attached is a zipped memory card image with a savegame that can be used to replicate the bug. When loading the save, move to the right and enter the first door you see. Once inside, use the screen just to the left of the door to retrieve a match. Wait a moment and, when the security guard enters, talk to him to begin the fight. There you should be able to try and use Yoshi's gulp ability to reproduce the bug.

now that is really weird. i tried all three plugins (D3D9, D3D11, and Open GL), and all of them worked just fine. actually, the bug still occurs if you are not pushing any buttons or are pushing any button but the right one. try changing you settings in the gc pad section to make L and R 1 and 2, respectively. This should help cut downj on confusion. then try pushing and holding either one to see if the bug still happens. if you cannot get any further on Mac OSX. I can upload your profile on a mem card with the battle after the armoured harriers as a workaround until the devs find the problem. also, i found that even with open gl or D3D11, the bug that was masked by fast mipmaps still occurs. next time when you load it. try to no press any buttons after the one that displays the warning lable, because it appears literally right before the intro, which most people skip. then see if it still occurs. in my experience with gl, it is a brifer pause then D3D9, but is still noticable.

oh all this testing is done on 3-810,if you want, ask me to try another revision that it appears in.

Please explain the actual issue in the report, I can't find it on the wiki page and you really shouldn't expect us to read each word in the screeds you guys just wrote (besides the info probably isn't mentioned there, either).

Since it was removed from the wiki:

Hatched Yoshi's Gulp Prior to 3.0
Upon acquiring the Yoshi partner in Glitz Arena, the Yoshi is required to complete the next fight against the Iron Clefts using his Gulp ability. However, the Action Command for it needs to be performed, but it does not work properly. It requires you to hold R and then release it upon reaching the end of a meter. The meter never fills, briefly flashes a full meter, and then fails. This pattern occurs regardless of the mapped input and pattern of pressing R. Unfortunately, you cannot advance further in the game if you experience this glitch.

  • Status changed from New to Questionable
  • Issue type set to Bug

@ tabacco
I just downloaded your attached memory card file, followed the instructions and performed the "gulp" move without issue. (in post-3.5 Dolphin)
Are you the one that added this issue to the wiki or does someone else experience this problem?
Please try Dolphin 3.5 or later and verify the issue is still present for you.
If so, please attach your "GCPadNew.ini" and state which button you are pressing for "R".

I'm not the one that added the issue to the wiki, it was already there but noted as "Fixed in 3.0" at the time.

The good news is, it does seem to be working in 3.5, so thank you!

Try a newer development build, kevin. http://dolphin-emu.org/download/ Enough has changed since 3.5 that it's no longer useful for reporting issues with.

It's marked as fixed but it's back in 4.0.2
guess that won't be fixed...

I RESOLVED IT !

It's really dumb, for anyone who has this issue playing paper mario : Gulp wasn't working because i accidently bound my R and Z to the same key on my keyboard ! It apparently didn't bother gameplay, until yoshi's Gulp. So check your binding keys, i think you have that problem.
