Emulator Issues #7708
closedBurnout 2: Texture problems on certain vehicles

Description
Game runs great and has no audio glitches, however, it has 3 bugs with, of all things, textures on a few trailer models for tractor trailers. I've tried unchecking and checking various things to fix them, but nothing worked. On the actual console, they're fine, so it's not a legitimate screw up by the developers.
Here's an Imgur album with the trailers affected by this bizarre GFX bug:

I have attached some Fifo files of the problem. Oh wait, nevermind, Google Code has a fucking bullshit 10mb file limit. I'll Dropbox them.

The game version is the PAL version GB4P51, however, the NTSC version suffers from the same problem as well.

Whoops, that should read "On one traffic car", also this isn't a defect unique to just this copy of a game, it's a universal bug on all versions when it's ran on Dolphin. The version of Dolphin i'm using is dolphin-master-4.0-3419-x64.

Can you get screenshots from console for comparison. I don't know what's wrong.

The textures are completely screwed up. Pixelated. Most likely a mip-mapping problem with the GFX plugin Hold on, I will get a few screenshots from the console.

Here are the console shots, I can't see how you could possibly not tell the difference:

Got it, I see the problem lol. They're rendered at the wrong resolution for some reason. I've seen this before, too.

Also, that compact traffic car is missing the engine texture for some weird reason, so you can see the pavement/ground underneath when the hood flies off. It's fine on the console. I hope it's not a geometry problem.

Found some more messed up undersized textures. Destination boards on the front and rear of 3 buses aren't being rendered correctly, as well as another trailer.

Why are your "console" screenshots 1920x1080?
Updated by FuturamaKicksAss71 over 9 years ago
Because I don't have access to my Gamecube, it's in my closet with a bunch of other consoles. Those are off the PS2 version running on PCSX2. I've watched vids of Burnout 2 being played on the actual GC and they didn't have any of those bugs.
Updated by JMC4789 over 9 years ago
That's not a good habit to get into; there are actually bugs that have been noticed on Dolphin that weren't in the PCSX2 version (notably Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4) where it turned out the that console port had bugs.

That isn't the case with Burnout 2 however. Those textures are being put out undersized for some reason.

I dug my GC out, dusted it off and got some shots.

Have you tried Safe Texture Cache? It could just be hash collisions between the actual textures and their low-res mipmap variants.

Safe Texture Cache does not alleviate the issue.

As I said in the description, i've tried unchecking various things, and nothing worked.

Oh yeah, I tried putting the slider to Safe on the Texture Cache as well, didn't work.

Do you guys still need those fifos I linked, or is it cool if I take them off my Dropbox?
Updated by JMC4789 over 9 years ago
Upload them to a more permanent place, if this is addressed months/years down the road, someone will need those fifos.

Go ahead. I've reuploaded them all in one .zip for everyone's convenience: http://cl.ly/Xssg

Is this issue still present. Which backend are you using or does it affect D3D and OpenGL. Does it work on Software Renderer.
Can someone try the hashless branch as well, feeding off pauldacheez's comment.
Updated by JMC4789 over 9 years ago
I tried software renderer, it's broken there too. Took forever to get there.

I have the PAL version so I could check if it's a regression, but I'm sure you devs tried that approach.
Updated by JMC4789 over 9 years ago
See if the PAL Version has the problem at all; I'm thinking it may not.

I wonder if this, like Spyro, is related to Dolphin's lack of a texture cache?

Fix pending in PR4512 - https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/pull/4512
Note: Verified on console that the textures are lower resolution than the PS2 version. There was still a texturing bug, but they still look kind of crappy when correct.
