Description

Game Name?

SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman

Game ID?

GSQE78

What's the problem? Describe what went wrong in few words.

The game always hangs on the first loading screen with the licensing/copyright info without Skip EFB Access from CPU. Enabling the hack somehow bypasses this screen and lets the game boot, but causes issues such as a black screen instead of a title menu.

What did you expect to happen instead?

Should boot properly without enabling a gross hack that causes graphical glitches.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Start game without Skip EFB Access from CPU checked
  2. Watch it drop to 1%/0FPS and hang on the Licensed by Nintendo screen

Dolphin 3.5 and 3.5-367 are old versions of Dolphin that have
known issues and bugs, so don't report issues about them and test the
latest Dolphin version first.
Which versions of Dolphin did you test on?

4.0-4368, 4.0-5110, 4.0-5118

Does using an older version of Dolphin solve your issue? If yes, which
versions of Dolphin used to work?

Does not work on any builds tested. The oldest test on the wiki is 4.0.2 which does not mention having to use Skip EFB Access, though it does list crashing as an issue.

What are your PC specifications? (including, but not limited to: Operating
System, CPU and GPU)

Ubuntu 14.10 x86_64, Intel Core i3-3220 @ 3.3GHz, nVidia GeForce GTX 650

Is there any other relevant information? (e.g. logs, screenshots,
configuration files)

MD5 Checksum: 30b0601c43c4ee30b7498427c2aa70f5 (confirmed with gametdb.com)

1%/0fps? Is it a hard hang, or just running really slowly because of Dolphin's terrible implementation of EFB access?

I once tried waiting there for like 5 minutes and it didn't do anything. It looks like it's trying to do something but it doesn't actually get anywhere. I'll start it up right now and just leave it running for like 20 minutes and see if it boots but I doubt it.

Wow it actually booted, but it took literally a full 10 minutes of waiting on the screen watching it bounce between FPS: 0 - VPS: 0 - 0% and FPS: 1 - VPS: 1 -2% before it got ingame. So it's not a hard hang, it's just extreeeemely slow.

Should be somewhat fixed by PR2357 -> https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/pull/2357

This has been merged, can you test to see if latest master resolves the issue?

I've tested this game since and it runs okayish. It's not exactly a lightweight game regardless. It's in the Monster Hunter Tri category of games.

The game's initial loading is still pretty slow for me after all this time, but it's manageable compared to how it was when I made this issue report (runs 7-12% speed, takes 50 seconds, so over 10x faster than before). The "Press Start" screen is also the same speed as the loading and it can be a bit dodgy at accepting the start button input. Gameplay is just fine afterwards.

Dolphin 5.0-10833, Intel Core i3-3220 @ 3.3GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB driver 430.26, Lubuntu 18.10, all settings default, md5 "30b0601c43c4ee30b7498427c2aa70f5".
